Our Brief Time in the Light

The title of this body of work ‘Our Brief Time in the Light’ which explores themes of awe, fragility and nature, comes from a line in psychiatrist Irvin Yalom’s book ‘Staring at the Sun’, through which he examines the universal issue of mortality.

…it is my hope that by grasping, really grasping, our human condition – our finiteness, our brief time in the light-we will come not only to savor the preciousness of each moment and the pleasure of sheer being but to increase our compassion for ourselves and for all other human beings.
Irvin D. Yalom, Staring at the Sun

Via subject, medium and materiality, the project makes reference to our environmental and human condition. The captured moments of sun vs. clouds speaks to feeling connected to something greater than oneself and encountering self as part of a larger whole. I began using this subject matter during a period of acute personal loss and uncertainty, but with time it has transformed to represent optimism, compassion and an appreciation of dynamic unities in life.

This poignant symbolism executed through my hybrid process, can be seen as an analogy for dismantling dichotomies of nature vs. technology, manual vs. digital, life vs. death.
