A Three-Dimensional Sky

The body of work A Three-Dimensional Sky was born from the discovery of century-old magic lantern slides in a second-hand store. I was struck by the lineage from these portable antique ‘windows’ to our contemporary devices and image-sharing platforms, from their glass surfaces to the rounded edges of their monochromatic black borders. I continued to collect slides from eBay (the thrift store’s incarnation in the internet age) featuring universal images of nature that exemplified surfaces, cycles and scale, from dramatic seas to monumental mountain tops. I layered the glass photographs over my own colour printed images of the same subjects and rephotographed them to make ‘double exposures’. Just as the ocean unifies different shores in time and space, these works compress past and present combining distinct temporal and material realities. The brutal power of the subject matter married with the palpable fragility of cut paper, reflects upon historic philosophical notions of nature, Romanticism and the Technological Sublime.
